a room with a view (criterion)

After a brief and highly inappropriate affair, Lucy ends her vacation early and flees back to her English countryside home before their scandal catches and spreads like wildfire.

Picture 9/10. Bringing you all the best reviews of high definition entertainment. While it's completely void of pops, crackle, thumps and other age-revealing characteristics, it does have one slight flaw linked to the music.

Those unique aspects make the should-be unbearable and repetitious story worth the emotional investment. Price Match Guarantee. The hot and heavy stuff in the trailer was post-marriage when they returned to Florence for their honeymoon.

Overview - Merchant Ivory Productions, led by director James Ivory and producer Ismail Merchant, became a household name with 'A Room with a View,' the first of their extraordinary adaptations of E. M. Forster novels. Helena Bonham Carter (Fight Club, Wings of the Dove) and Julian Sands (Leaving Las Vegas, Warlock) seem to take the cake, but the entire cast is quite good. The story moved slowly, it seemed, for the same reason you try to make ice cream last: because it’s so good.

Notify me of follow-up comments? Very faint traces of runs are there, but they are not easy to spot, nor are they ever a distraction. Because of that, you can tell that extra effort was put into making the colors pop. Nevertheless, Criterion has done their usual amazing job with the disc giving it new life in the video department and offering up a very rich and robust soundtrack. I recommend this movie to fans of this type of film, but a rental would serve all but die-hard fans as this disc offers no supplements and an average transfer. When the film begins, she and her cousin (Maggie Smith) chaperone have just arrived at their hotel in Florence, Italy. Often times, movies like 'A Room with a View' (which still doesn't have a rating) didn't go through the MPAA ratings board. In Florence, Lucy meets a passionate and down-to-Earth young British man named George (Julian Sands) who is obviously attracted to her. We've gotten to a point in cinema where there have been so many films made about so many things that the vast majority of them can make you say, "I've seen this before." CriterionCast Announcement.

Trevor’s A Room with a View review. A Room With A View’s cast is across-the-board fantastic.

Among the smaller roles you’ll find Judi Dench as a bold, eccentric novelist, and Simon Callow as a warmhearted country vicar. This Criterion Blu-ray has added a few features of note so let’s explore those. The highlight, though, may be Daniel Day-Lewis going full Urkel as Cecil, Lucy’s nebbish fiancé. Aging flaws such as specs, grime and scratches are nowhere to be found. CriterionCast Blu-Ray Wish list episode. A nice array of supplements (although not as packed to the gills as other Criterion titles) are included and should make for an easy recommendation. In those moments, there is a slight shakiness that can be heard underneath them, but aside from that, the audio is pretty solid. Lucy visits Florence only with vacationing intent. The film is also absolutely gorgeous—the cinematography by Tony Pierce-Roberts captures both interiors and exteriors in beautiful lights and eye-catching angles—and the film rightly won an Academy Award for Best Art Direction for its intricately detailed indoor spaces. Between them, the delightful screenplay and its witty and subtly comedic dialog, it stands out amongst the other period pieces of its type. Such is the case with 'A Room with a View.' Will Lucy decide in favor of tradition and properness or let her feelings take charge of her life? The dialogue is the main focus and this mix ensures that each word is heard in high clarity form and at a proper volume and while any range is certainly limited, it’s a nice soundstage that’s sure to please. The internal conflict that ensues is one of gut vs. logical decision-making.

Take, for example, '(500) Days of Summer.'

This is more of a romp through a fantastic story loaded with superb performances.

Two new hearty special features have been included with this new transfer. Colors are warm, detail has been improved and the ever-present edge enhancement from the DVD version is a thing of the past. A fine effort from Criterion. When it comes to the cleanliness and the clarity of this restored transfer, you can tell that there is an extra bit of love put into it, presumably due to his oversight.

But if she even came close to any such excitement, her aunt would scoop her up and return home without an eye lash of hesitation. Merchant Ivory Productions, led by director James Ivory and producer Ismail Merchant, became a household name with A Room with a View, the first of their extraordinary adaptations of E. M. Forster novels.

“A Room with a View” enjoys its storytelling so much that I enjoyed the very process of it. While she secretly enjoys being with him, he's not the driven and educated man that Lucy has been taught to seek her whole life, so she doesn't give him the time of day. James Ivory’s and Ismail Merchant’s hit film A Room with a View comes to Blu-ray from The Criterion Collection, replacing the previous Warner/BBC releases on DVD, Blu-ray, and even HD-DVD.

Vertical runs have been cleaned up to the point where you really have to be looking for them to notice their once-existant presence. The vocal track carries the clarity and rich punch needed to accent the actors' performances; the effects mixing contains a whole lot of environmental sounds that bring the settings to life. A Room With A View is no exception to these rules, and one of the independent studio’s most successful pictures. Films independently produced outside of the studio system weren't as easy to come by.

The characters seem more lively and the production design seems a little better than most of these literary art house movies and maybe that’s why I like it so much. The crazy part (that can sometimes become an overloading nuissance), is the amount of sound - both dialogue and effects - that's layered in specific scenes. This film was directed by James Ivory, who knows his path within a period piece like this as he should, since he has directed many, many of them. Plus, it wouldn't really be a relationship story if that wasn't the case, right?) Worried that this might be an issue caused by my set, I looked up other reviews online to find that no one else is talking about this issue, but one High-Def Digest reader reached out to us to see if we've noticed the same issue. That's literally the only thing that would keep it from being a PG period piece. Odds are that films like this are hit and miss with audiences. It carries a genuine quality that's hard to come by and deserves to be recognized when discovered.

Granted, some of these “British” films aren’t exactly bursting with color and though this is the case with the film, I immediately noticed a difference in overall image quality, the film seemed to have a sheen to it that really gave it a more “film like” appearance. (If you haven't seen it, don't worry – I haven't spoiled a thing. Instead of seeing the riverways and chapels, her balcony only reveals a view of an alley below.

At home, it seems as if the incident is finally behind her; she’s quickly engaged to a more appropriate suitor. It's no surprise to learn of their involvement in the transfer process; however, there's a reoccurring problem on this disc that takes away from all the good. Being that all sound emits from just two speakers, it becomes a little overwhelming and has the potential to make you feel audibly claustrophobic within it's jam-packed track. Upon returning home to England, she meets the opposite man (Daniel Day-Lewis) and immediately agrees to marry him. This doesn't happen frequently, but at times you can hear warbles within the swelling moments of the beautiful scoring, in particular when notes are held.

There’s also a vintage NBC news segment about Merchant and Ivory’s history and collaborations, which serves as a nice primer on the duo. This film features an impressive ensemble cast that shines throughout, all the actors manage to give terrific turns here. If you’re a fan of movies like Howard’s End, Jane Austen adaptations, or other such art house period pieces, A Room With A View is a movie that deserves a place in your collection.

For those who are picking up or who have already picked up this disc, beware that you might also see this issue pop up throughout the film.

I haven’t seen the previous high-definition releases, though only heard poor things about them, but I can only imagine this offers a significant improvement based on the comments I have read.

As no other reviewers have noted this issue yet (only I and one High-Def reader have called it out so far), it appears to be an intermittent disc flaw. Adapted from the E.M. Forster novel of the same title, View stars a teenaged Helena Bonham Carter as Lucy Honeychurch, an unconventional girl from a wealthy (and conventional) English family. Funny, sexy, and sophisticated, this gargantuan art-house hit features a sublime supporting cast—including Simon Callow, Judi Dench, Denholm Elliott, Maggie Smith—and remains a touchstone of intelligent romantic cinema. Remember my personal information There’s still a little room for improvement, but not much – this new transfer was certainly well worth the wait. CriterionCast Wacky New Year’s Drawing.

Founded in April 2006, High-Def Digest is the ultimate guide for High-Def enthusiasts who demand only the best that money can buy. While this isn’t the movie to choose for high octane audio, the new DTS HD Master Audio 2.0 mix is rather robust (or at least as robust as any 2.0 mix can be). I also want to make special note of Daniel Day Lewis’ magnificent performance here which is refined, controlled, and picture perfect. My favorite character in “A Room with a View” is George Emerson, the earnest, passionate young man whose heart beats fiercely with love for Lucy Honeychurch. This is as solid a literary period piece as I have seen and Ivory went on to create several more of high caliber after this one. Sep 04, 2020

The story is simple: lonely guy falls for new girl, they get together, it's perfect for a short time, they break up, he's destroyed. When it was released in 1986, the world of independent cinema wasn't what it is now.
