Von Braun: Dreamer of Space, Engineer of War by Michael J. Neufeld (Knopf, 2007). In this selection of images, see how our view of Earth has gone from the grainy, black-and-white images from 100 feet up to stunning, vibrant color images from 100 million miles away.

Today, they are known as the Van Allen Belts. Rocket and satellite engineers quickly got to work, trying to prove they were also capable of launching into space. Launch Location: Vandenberg Air Force Base, CA. Satellites have enabled us to gain a better understanding of how our planet's interconnected systems work together and respond to change, while also admiring its natural beauty. Facts on the launch, orbit and science experiments of Explorer 1 and milestones leading up to the mission. Preparations at Cape Canaveral went on in secrecy for weeks, according to NASA, but as the launch date approached the media was informed. They launched the United States into space and showed that it was possible to do science from orbit. Explorer 1 was the United States' first satellite in space. Explorer 1 was big news. The latter rocket was based on an Army rocket designed by German scientist Wernher Von Braun, who worked on the V-2 missile program that sent bombs to England during World War II. Explorer 1’s last transmission was received May 23, 1958, although it remained in orbit until March 31, 1970. On that count, NASA succeeded.

Of Explorer 1's 30 pounds, more than 18 pounds of that was made up of instruments. This representation by NASA’s Scientific Visualization Studio shows the orbits of NASA-related near-Earth science missions from the first U.S. satellite, Explorer 1, in 1958 through 2017.

Examining how the radiation belts protect Earth from high-energy particles; Finding that the belts' shape depends on what kind of electrons are being studied (which means that depending on the electron being looked at, the belts can be unified or separate); Ongoing studies on how the belts change during geomagnetic storms.

Following the launch of the Soviet Union's Sputnik 1 on October 4, 1957, the U.S. Army Ballistic Missile Agency was directed to launch a satellite using its Jupiter C rocket developed under the direction of Dr. Wernher von Braun. This is the first time that two spacecraft simultaneously studied the belts. Then history intervened. Diese hauptsächlich von der Armee in Huntsville (Alabama) …

Mission: Explorer 1.

NASA’s Citizen Science programs offer myriad ways to explore Earth, the stars, other planets and even asteroids. Explorer 1 was the first satellite launched by the United States when it was sent into space on January 31, 1958.

Besides the cosmic ray detectors, it also carried experiments such as temperature sensors (both internal and external) and a microphone to listen for micrometeorites hitting the satellite. • NASA images and videos of Explorer 1 and other early satellites A quick response to the Soviet Union's launch of Sputnik 1, Explorer 1's success marked the beginning of the U.S. Space Age.

It is not typical for a mission to start science observations right away as the instruments are still being configured.
